What a local business website needs before you buy more ads
The pages, proof, and call path a garage door, HVAC, plumbing, or electrical site needs before you spend another dollar on traffic.
Most local service companies start thinking about ads when the phone gets quiet. The instinct is fine, the order is usually wrong. If the site confuses people, ads pay to confuse more of them, faster, and in a category like garage door repair the clicks are some of the most expensive in local search.
Ads multiply whatever the website already does.
This is the checklist we walk through before any garage door, HVAC, plumbing, or electrical company raises spend. None of it requires a redesign. Most of it is a weekend of honest work.
Pass the ten second test first
A homeowner with a dead furnace or a door stuck half open does not read your site. They scan it. In about ten seconds they decide three things.
- Does this company do the work I need?
- Do they cover my area?
- How do I reach them right now?
Open your homepage on a phone and time it. The first screen should say what you do and where, in plain words. Furnace and AC repair in Pueblo. Garage door spring replacement, same day when the schedule allows. The phone number belongs on that first screen, and it should dial when tapped.
Build the pages people actually search for
Homeowners search for the problem rather than your company name. Each of these deserves its own page that names the work, explains what happens after they call, and gives them a way to reach you.
- Drain cleaning
- Panel upgrade
- Garage door opener repair
- AC not cooling
A single Services page with twelve bullet points cannot rank for any of those searches, and it does a poor job selling to the people who land on it. You do not need fifty pages. You need one page per service you genuinely want more of, written in the words a customer would use on the phone.
Service area pages matter too, but only for areas you can back up with real work. That deserves its own guide. For now, the short version: if you serve three towns, you should have something true and specific to say about all three.
Show proof that a real crew shows up
Local buyers are looking for one thing above everything else: evidence that a real company will actually show up. Stock photos of smiling models in clean uniforms tell them nothing. A photo of your truck in a driveway tells them a lot.
- Put your license number where it is easy to find.
- Add photos of finished jobs, even ordinary ones. A replaced water heater or a tidy new panel is more convincing than any slogan.
- Quote a few reviews with first names and link to where they live on Google.
- If you are a two truck operation, say so. Plenty of homeowners prefer hiring the owner.
Make the call path simple
Every page needs an obvious way to reach you. A phone number in the header that dials on tap. A short form for the people who will not call, asking for name, phone, and the problem, nothing more. Every extra field costs you leads.
Then decide what happens when the phone rings and nobody can pick up. Voicemail loses jobs in the trades because the caller simply dials the next company in the results.
Track something before you spend
Before ads, you need a baseline. How many calls and form submissions does the site produce in a normal week? Which pages do they come from? If you cannot answer that, ad reporting will be guesswork with a budget attached.
Basic call tracking and form notifications are enough to start. Once you can see that the water heater page produced six calls last month and the homepage produced two, decisions about where to point ad money get much easier, and you will know within weeks whether the ads earned their keep.
Then buy the ads
None of this argues against advertising. Ads work in the trades, and in urgent categories they work fast. The point is the order of operations.
- 01Fix the ten second test.
- 02Build the service pages.
- 03Show proof.
- 04Wire the call path.
- 05Turn on tracking.
Then the same budget buys real jobs instead of expensive lessons. If you want an outside read before you spend, start with a free scan of your live site.
